“Life’s ebbs & flows bring unexpected undertows, pulling us under, thrashing we rise up finding power in survival & resilience” muses Rand on her thematic oeuvre she’s been working on for the past three years.
Duality is a common theme in Rand’s current oeuvre where the tension of opposite ideas in hues or imagery creates kinetic energy. The unseen skeleton outlives the seen flesh, decomposing after death, and is studied by scientists and archeologists for answers to past and present questions. And one reason why bones appear in Rand’s artwork.
Rand honors her mother’s battle with Alzheimer’s & dementia by dividing her images between the left and right hemispheres with gold dots. The use of layered ebony as the base of her materials is a nod to the artist’s MRI brain scan, revealing darkened spots due to damage from her near-death experience with carbon monoxide & gas poisoning leaking into her home.
Her self-portrait appears crucified, screaming while floating above chaos & pain after being planted, uprooted and replanted; a continuous cycle as rhizome weep. Some see horns as demonic but in nature they represent strength and provide protection. She paints them on her head forming a crown or crescent moon and star, alluding to the east and to Venus, the Morning Star.
She paints from the top to the center then flips the art & repeats variations to the middle in homage to the eye that flips upside-down images for us 24-7 so we see upright in our insane, topsy-turvy world.
Rand’s MFA from Claremont Graduate University is in painting & drawing. Her art has exhibited in LA, Washington DC, Japan & Armenia. Her studio is in Keystone Art Space.
