about Mark Harvey / FLUXION

Mark Harvey is a graphic designer, photographer, and self-publishing artist living in Los Angeles.

Harvey self-publishes and independent arts Journal, Fluxion, infrequently.
In addition to editing, designing and publishing Fluxion, Harvey is currently working as a freelance photographer and graphic designer through his own studio Fluxion Media and is an adjunct assistant professor of Graphic Design at Pasadena City College, and Glendale Community College as well as teaching a series of digital photography and design workshops.

He is a studio artist at the Keystone Art Space in Glassell Park, co-director of Keystone Gallery with Melanie Mandl, and is contributing member of Create L.A., an educational arts charity dedicated to engaging youth in quality arts education programming; promoting the spread of specialized skill-sets from this generation of artisans to the next and to provide a community space for local business, recreation and arts to thrive. 

Harvey is among the founding members of Pasadena Photography Arts, who are dedicated to the promotion of photographic arts in the Pasadena environs; encouraging and supporting established and emerging fine art, documentary and conceptual photographers through promotion, exhibitions, publications and educational programs. 

He also belong to numerous professional associations such as AIGA (American Institute of Graphic Arts), College Arts Association, and the Society of Photographic Educators.

Harvey, originally from Hopewell, Virginia, studied Communication Arts and Design at Virginia Commonwealth University, in Richmond VA from 1983 to 1987 with Phillip Meggs, and received an MFA in photography from the Maryland Institute, College of Art, with Will Larson, from 1993 to 1995.

Since moving to Los Angeles in 1995, Harvey has worked as the Art director for The Advocate magazine, Creative director for FotoFactory Press’s Fine Art editions, designed DVD packaging and theatrical movie posters with Kustom Creative for Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, Sony Pictures Classics, MGM, Lions Gate Films, and others.

He co-founded Antebellum Gallery in Hollywood in 2005 with Rick Castro and was a co-curator/owner for that space from 2005 – 2006.

Harvey has also published two fine art books under the Fluxion Editions imprint: 13 Years of Bondage: the Photography of Rick Castro, in 2004 and Fellow Travelers: A Photographic Memoir by Mark Thompson in 2006.
